Framing shots Uses an optical viewfinder that shows 96 to 100 percent of the scene.

Powering the camera Takes disposable batteries that require infrequent replacement.
Snapping shots Instantaneous capture.
Storing pictures Stores images directly on the capture medium (film), which is single-use and supplies a fixed number of frames per roll

  Digital Camera:

Recording pictures Uses a light-sensitive, fixed silicon chip in  CCD or CMOS. This chip decides the frame size and the light sensitivity of the camera.

Framing shots Uses an optical viewfinder, as well as an LCD that displays 100 percent of the scene. Consumes a lot of battery power

Powering the camera  battery types–both disposable and rechargeable–that require frequent replacement or recharging.

Snapping shots Varies wildly, depending upon speed of autofocus, file format, , memory available for temporary storage media type, sensor type, and. image size

Storing pictures It stores images as digital files on reusable memory cards or discs- come in various capacities and hold a variable number of frames per card   File Format

JPEG: Small and fast for capture – has file compression that may introduce artifacts which degrade image quality TIFF Large files that can slow down your shooting and fill up your media – no compression artifacts

Displaying pictures can see images on the LCD and also  to connect to a TV for group viewing Can  upload the pictures to an online photo-album site to share with the friends.

Printing pictures Image files can be downloaded to a computer for printing on home computer or through a  compatible printer by  attaching  camera directly to it.

Basic Point-and-Shoot

Beginner-level digital cameras are a great solution for those who plan to share small images of medium quality and who wants a starter camera to help them get the idea of digital photography. But have limited manual features and a limited image resolution of usually less than 3 megapixels.

Advanced Point & Shoot

It will have manual shooting modes, LCD, resolution of 3-5 megapixels, better lens quality, optical zoom and data ports.

Digital SLR

It is a  high-end digital camera category and will have creative control. Lenses can be exchangeable, have optical zoom and  of higher quality; image resolution is 5 megapixels and higher; This Camera allows you to have  professional-level controls for shooting and manipulating images.  Some of the additional features which will give an idea to which camera you like to choose:

Resolution

A camera’s resolution is decided by pixels- the more pixels, the higher the resolution. And the higher the resolution of a digital photo, the more you can enlarge it without losing image quality. Camera resolution is measured in millions of pixels, or megapixels. The more of Pixels the price will be moreIf you want to share picture on line go for a camera with less than 3 pixels and if you want to enlarge pictures go for a high resolution cameraThe resolution and the print size can be correlated: If it is less than 3 megapixels then the better  print size will be 4” x 6” and if it is between 3 -  4 then better print size is 8” x 10” and between 4- 6  it can be 11” x 14”

Memory

- use external memory: a memory card(removable storage) that can be  removed  when it’s full and  download it into the  computer, and then again it can be used.

Memory cards are available- CompactFlash, Memory Stick, SecureDigital, SmartMedia, and xD Picture Cards-and storage capacities, measured in megabytes. Normally  cameras come with a low capacity card (8MB-16MB), Depends upon the compression the no of pictures can be taken varies- example 64 mb card can be used for 32 pictures of better quality of high compression. If the compression is reduced then quantity of pictures can be doubled or tripled or more

Batteries

The camera consumes battery  quickly. Better to look for a camera which uses rechargeable batteries and also ac power adapter for using at time of image viewing and downloading

Zoom

It can  be either digital or optical.-to get a closer view of the  image before you taking the picture for  increasing the quality of the image.

View Finder

The camera uses optical view finder and some cameras in addition to optical view finder uses LCD screen as view finder But using LCD view finder consumes battery power rapidly.

 SOME OF THE OTHER FEATURES

AUTO FLASH The flash gets automatically activated in low-light conditions It will be very  helpful and convenient for children and tourists

Date Imprinting  This feature allows  the date or time to be printed on the photograph during exposure –this will Help you to remember when the photograph was taken.

Red Eye Reduction The camera shoots a small burst of light for an instant before the main flash, which prevents the red eye effect that can appear in the photographs.
